Panama Canal Expansion Program 72 % complete

In a letter signed by Panama Canal Authority’s CEO Jorge Quijano and dated January 3, 2014, The Panama Canal Authority reasserted its commitment to successfully complete the canal expansion program. The letter followed news relating a dispute between the Panama Canal Authority and the contractor in charge of the new locks, Grupo Unidos por el Canal S.A (GUPCSA). 

According to Mr. Quijano’s letter: “the Expansion Program has an overall completion rate of 72 percent and the new locks project, which is one component of the expansion program, is 65 percent complete. The project is expected to be open to commercial transits by mid-2015”.
