Tokyo Gas Engineering, Shikoku Electric, Sumitomo Chemical, Sumitomo Joint Electric Power and Shikoku Gas said in a joint statement that they have decided to build a new LNG terminal at Sumitomo’s Niihama chemical plant, located on Shikoku island.

The terminal, which will be built by Tokyo Gas Engineering, should start operations in February 2022.

The terminal will feature a 230,000cbm storage tank and will supply gas to the existing chemical plant and a new 150 MW gas-fired power plant to be built by Sumitomo Joint Electric. Once it is online, Sumitomo Joint Electric will shut down the existing coal-fired facilities at the Niihama plant.
