The LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2024 took place on October 6 in Hiroshima, organized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The conference focused on public-private dialogue about LNG’s role in achieving net-zero emissions, guided by a discussion paper from METI and the IEA.
One of the key outcomes was the expansion of Japan’s Coalition for LNG Emission Abatement toward Net-zero (CLEAN) initiative, which now includes 22 new LNG importers. Japan also agreed with the European Commission to collaborate on reducing methane emissions.
Additionally, Japan and Italy strengthened their cooperation following the June 2024 Japan-Italy Action Plan, focusing on gas security. The Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and Eni signed a memorandum of cooperation to support LNG procurement and diversify energy sources.
METI and Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) also agreed to collaborate on stable LNG supply. A joint chair summary was publicly released, highlighting the commitment to balancing energy security with environmental sustainability.
